Application Criteria

Thank you for your interest in applying to participate in the Institute for Youth Justice. In order to apply, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Spartanburg County resident

  • Currently enrolled as a junior or senior at the time of the application is submitted

  • Attend a Spartanburg County public or private high school or homeschool program

  • Have a desire to learn more about the inner-workings of the Justice System

  • Be willing to commit to attending the Opening retreat, 5 Sessions and the Graduation Ceremony

  • Have transportation or be able to arrange transportation to and from sessions

Application Process

Those who meet the criteria are encouraged to apply. Below is our application process:

1. Recruitment

The applications are made available to download here each year in the August or September. Download the application below and complete it. Please note, you must also submit two letters of support and complete a form that is signed by your high school principal or guidance counselor.

These pieces are a part of the application and must be submitted with the application.

2. Interviews

Once applications are received, a staff member will reach out to you to schedule a 15 minute interview. Remember, this is an opportunity for you to make a great first impression and lasting impact as the committee considers your application. Dress professionally. Show up a few minutes early. Be yourself!

3. Selection

A Committee comprised of local justice officials, law enforcement, donors, and supporters will review each application in-depth. A meeting is held to discuss the applicants and selections are made for that years cohort. Staff then reach out to applicants to let them know the outcome. If accepted, students will confirm their availability and commitment to participating. If not accepted, students are encouraged to reapply in the future.
